The Fortress, with its harbors and defenses and ancient houses are a rich treasure of history. The water and Hellevoetsluis are connected to each other. Thanks to its favorable and strategic location at the Haringvliet, Hellevoetsluis was home to the Dutch war fleet in the early 17th century. A port that was gradually strengthened, resulting in the unique combination of fortified city and war hades. Admirals like the Ruyter, Tromp and Piet Hein had their home.

Hellevoetsluis grew out after 1600 to Holland’s most important warharbour. The ships of the Admiralty of Rotterdam were cleaned, restored and equipped here. Over the years, a modest village developed on both sides of the Dock and the Port. Following the Second English War, the first defense work was established in 1665. Thirty years later, a new fortress system began, with the naval port becoming a characteristic format that is still recognizable.
In the beautiful fortress port, memories of the past are still very well visible and can be experienced in the Droogdok Jan Blanken, Stadsmuseum, The Defense Works and the Koningskade with its historic ships.
Hellevoetsluis has six beautiful harbours with a total of about 2000 berths. The ports provide a wonderful base for water enthousiasts who love the wide waters of the Haringvliet and the sea. From Hellevoetsluis it is possible to enter the Zeeuwse and Zuid-Hollandse Delta both through inland waterways and the sea. The various ports offer moorings a stone’s throw away from restaurants, cafés, hiking trails, museums in the historic fortress or shopping mall near the historic center of Hellevoetsluis.
